Futures Spread Charts are used to portray the relationship of one futures contract to another. Price is plotted on the vertical axis, time on the horizontal.
Capitol Commodity Services, Inc. provides a Spread Chart Builder to plot relationships between different futures contracts.
Here are brief summaries of the basic types of spread charts, Spreads and Ratios.
"Spreads" are the differences between prices. This type is the most common traded relationship as it allows for the simultaneous purchase and sale of two different futures contracts. A traders aim is to profit by changes in the difference between the contracts, widening or narrowing the price.
For example the price of Soybean Futures minus the price of Wheat Futures: (S2012H - W2012H).

"Ratios" are the division between prices. Ratios allow for any two instruments to be compared. The basic arithmetic works regardless of the contract unit or how it is priced. It is useful to to compare the performance of instruments in this manner to measure whether a ratio level suggests an instrument is undervalued or overvalued.
For example the price of Gold Futures divided by the S&P 500 Futures: (GC2011Z / SP2011Z).

These two types of Futures Spread Charts are very basic and only scratch the surface when using the Spread Chart Builder. The tool allows for Custom spread charts to plot the price difference between two or more contracts. Plot intra-market, inter-market, exotic, yield, ratio and expression spread charts. Combinations are limited only to your imagination: Historical spreads, Seasonal spreads, Spread expressions and more.
Spread Charts are free to all clients. Regardless of your account size or how often you trade, you can take advantage of this exclusive service. Simply login to access this service.
